Magnetic MCD Encoder with Analog Interface
Many applications use cost-efficient analog interfaces to detect rotary motion. If more than one revolution must be registered, users can choose between wear-intensive multi-turn potentiometers, and wear-free hall sensors which require a complex gear reduction system. By integrating an analog current or voltage interface into the single-turn and multi-turn MAGNETOCODE encoders (MCD), POSITAL provides an elegant solution to this problem.

This competitively priced option is an alternative to multi-turn potentiometers: thanks to the contact-free recording of the angular position and revolution, the system is completely wear-free. The fact that MCD encoders allow for the electronic adjustment of the measuring range is another major advantage, enabling users to use the complete output range to record measurements. The units are configured by moving the encoders into the desired end positions, which are then stored in the encoder by means of a teach-in input. The measured values between these positions are scaled automatically.

The analog encoder output features an upper and lower deadband range that if reached will detect if there is any wear and tear in the mechanical setup that the encoder is measuring. This avoids the controls from overreacting to invalid measurements.

Current absolute position values are stored permanently even without voltage supply, and are provided instantly after activation. The MCD encoder's internal component is a Wiegand wire with a coil wound around it. The Wiegand wire generates the energy required for registering revolutions from the rotary motion – neither continuous rotation nor a minimum number of revolutions are necessary.

The magnetic functional principle not only enables a robust, wear-free design and compact dimensions but also makes the encoders considerably less costly than optoelectronic models. Available as solid and hollow shaft versions, the encoders, which have a diameter of 36.5 mm, are also suitable for applications with limited installation space.
